Climate variability and agriculture in Italy: a stochastic frontier analysis at the regional level

2020

In the next future, climate change effects will represent a challenge for Europe and the Mediterranean area. These will have to cope with a rapid increase in climate variability. Although many economic sectors may be affected, agriculture is the most susceptible as climate heavily affects crop production trends, yield variability and the availability of areas suitable for cultivation. Using the stochastic frontier approach, the aim of this work is to analyse the impacts of climate variability on Italian regional technical efficiency in the agricultural sector for a period spanning from 2000 to 2009. Considering that technical inefficiency could be influenced by two main annual meteorologica…

Exploring the Rural within the Italian local development policy

2022

The countryside has a major role in Italy’s territorial identity and organization. The way agriculture has shaped the Italian territory and society, however, is a very complex historical process, marked by different political and economic purposes. By looking at the national territory under such an evolutionary perspective, and the changing approaches to rural development due to the influence of EU policies, this paper describes the main policy instruments that have been implemented across the Italian regions in recent decades. After this overview, the paper concludes with a critical discussion on the limits and potential of rural areas in the country’s development process.

A micro-founded approach to regional innovation in Italy

2022

Recent regional studies have taken a micro-founded perspective to uncover the influence of the external environment on the firm-level innovative performance. Despite the marked spatial disparities, there is a general lack of recent evidence on Italian regional innovation from a micro perspective. This paper fills this gap in the evidence base by estimating regional Knowledge Production Functions using Italian micro-data collected in the Community Innovation Survey. In particular, here we focus on the regional differences in the relationship between innovative inputs and outputs and on the ability of firms to absorb external knowledge. This analysis allows us to outline different regional in…

I tamburi a cornice in Sicilia

2015

Queste, sebbene affini a quelle impiegate in altre regioni italian…

Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaFirst evidences of frame drums in Sicily trace back to the V century b.C. Tambourines have been recorded until today by paintings archive documentation observations provided by foreign travellers folkloric literature and quite widely by modern ethnomusicology through audio and video recordings collected on the field. Morphology performance techniques repertoires decorations and social use of tambourines in Sicily refer to the wider context of Italian (central-southern part) and Mediteranean area but with some peculiarities chiefly referring to performance skills. Though similar to the techniques practised in other Italian regions in Sicily we can observe a typical style that can be connected with a common historical background with the Arabic-Islamic world.

LA POLITICA ORDINARIA E DI COESIONE NELLE REGIONI ITALIANE: UNA VALUTAZIONE SETTORIALE SUL FUNZIONAMENTO DEL PRINCIPIO DI ADDIZIONALITA'

2022

This paper analyses the degree of additionality of the Cohesion Policy to ordinary domestic spending in the Italian NUTS-2 regions during the last two programming periods (2007-2013 and 2014-2020). The European Commission has established that the Structural Funds must not be used to replace the disbursement of the Member States to the regions. However, the treatment could distort the allocative choices of the national policy maker. The main element of novelty is the ex-post panel evaluation of cohesion funds’ additionality to the Ordinary Policy through a sectoral breakdown of spending, controlling for the potential endogeneity of the cohesion variable. The sectoral approach allows us to as…

Labor Market Imbalances and Personnel Recruitment

2019

When the economy of a country starts to expand or collapse in wealth, it is reflected in the labor market with an impact on employment and personnel recruitment processes. The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between personnel recruitment and job market imbalances in the various de- velopmental conditions of the macroeconomic environment. Research find- ings show that employers tend to adopt more active, formal, competitive, targeted, and selective search behaviors in the positive cycles of the economy and employment. Conversely, in downturns of the economy and employ- ment, employers tend to be more passive and defensive, relying on informal relationships and, in some…
